service for accessing all boston globe stories, including freelancers'

Published by: mike 2010-03-17

  • Hi, I'd like to know if there is any service on the internet with which i can find ALL stories published in the boston globe in the last 5, 10 or 15 years or so -- which means that freelancer's stories are included. When one searches the Boston Globe archives, freelancers stories do not show up. Thank you very much, joan wilder

  • you're just great, thank you very much. i'll be back, best, joan

  • If that is true (I'm not doubting you, just unsure), although my freelance articles always show up in other major publications, then it is because the freelance contract didn't give TBG rights to republish them electronically. If that is true, then there is no online source.

  • Can you give us an example of a specific story or author that you're looking for, so we can confirm whether or not it is available in any databases we search? Thanks, pafalafa-ga

  • >>hi<< Hi >>i'm not sure what to do now.<< You don't have to do anything. Another researcher may yet pick up on this question, and come up with a solution that I'm unaware of. You can, however, cancel this question if you wish. >>i of course know about tasini vs the new york times.<< I suspected as much... >>if you're sure of your answer, then i guess you've answered my question<< Doesn't really seem like I have answered it, as you don't yet have the database you're seeking. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist, but I've been (on very rare occasions!) wrong before. >>seems like you should be paid something for it<< Nice of you to say so, but not necessary. >>i've never used nexus-lexus<< It's a great tool, for reporters and others. I also checked Factiva, another news database, but with the same results. Check with your public library, as they might have access to these, or another newspaper database. >>thanks, joan<< You're quite welcome. Hope we'll see you back here at Google Answers one of these days. paf

  • Joan, your articles appear in at least one (probably more) subscription databases. I found 240 articles with your byline, in a list that looks like this: TOWN MEETING QUORUM LOWERED, The Boston Globe, February 16, 2006 SCHOOL EYED AS TOWN HALL, The Boston Globe, February 12, 2006 NEW SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, The Boston Globe, February 09, 2006 KINDERGARTEN PACKETS AVAILABLE, The Boston Globe, February 05, 2006 DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS, The Boston Globe, February 02, 2006 OPEN LATE, CLOSED EARLY, The Boston Globe, January 26, 2006 DEADLINE FOR TOWN MEETING SUBMISSIONS, The Boston Globe, January 22, 2006 REWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE, The Boston Globe, January 19, 2006 LIEUTENANT PROMOTED TO FIRE CHIEF, The Boston Globe, January 15, 2006 NOMINATION PAPERS, The Boston Globe, January 12, 2006 SUPPORT GROUP FOR CAREGIVERS, The Boston Globe, January 08, 2006 SEVEN PROJECTS GET GRANTS, The Boston Globe, January 05, 2006 PERSONNEL BOARD OPENING, The Boston Globe, January 01, 2006 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE, The Boston Globe, December 29, 2005 SNOW AND ICE ACCOUNT DEFICIT, The Boston Globe, December 25, 2005 SPECIAL TOWN MEETING, The Boston Globe, December 22, 2005 CROWLEY SCHOOL'S FUTURE MULLED, The Boston Globe, December 01, 2005 NELSON BACK ON THE JOB, The Boston Globe, November 27, 2005 EXPIRATION DATE FOR JOB, The Boston Globe, November 24, 2005 NO SURPRISES AT TOWN MEETING, The Boston Globe, November 20, 2005 INTERIM HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, The Boston Globe, November 17, 2005 OPEN SPACE PANEL SEEKS MEMBERS, The Boston Globe, November 13, 2005 COLLEGE PLANNING SEMINARS, The Boston Globe, November 10, 2005 RATE DOWN, TAXES UP, The Boston Globe, November 06, 2005 CULTURAL COUNCIL GRANTS, The Boston Globe, November 3, 2005 and so on.... The articles go back only as far as 2002, however. Should I post the full list as an answer to your question? paf

  • hi, i'm not sure what to do now. i of course know about tasini vs the new york times. if you're sure of your answer, then i guess you've answered my question. seems like you should be paid something for it. i've never used nexus-lexus. thanks, joan

  • Hi, Sorry I haven't responded. i never did this before and didn't--still don't really--understand how to work it. you can search for articles by me -- joan wilder -- i've written about 20 in the last ten years (aside from a bunch of news briefs i write for the globe every week, but those are almost never put online and when they are, interestingly, they do show up even though i'm a freelancer). Thanks, joan

  • Joan, --You're doing the comment/clarification thing just fine --You haven't paid yet (other than a 50 cents listing fee)...you will be automotically charged only if a researcher posts an answer --I'm hoping to answer your question, but if I can't, it will be open to other researchers as well. As for the subject matter at hand, I'm afraid you'll have a hard time finding your articles -- or any freelance articles -- from dates earlier than 2002. The culprit is the Supreme Court's Tasini decision, which was something of a Pyrhhic legal victory for freelancers: http://www.llrx.com/features/tasini.htm As a result, most pre-2002 freelance content has disappeared. The database I used was Lexis-Nexis, but a check of a few other databases showed the same result -- none of your articles were available prior to 2002. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you at this point. paf

  • hi, i guess this is how i respond to your post. i actually still haven't learned how this thing works, i.e., have i paid for this question to be answered? have you accepted it as a job? anyway, what i want is not a list, but the address and name of the data base so i can use it. i really did want to get older stories, and the one you've found only has then from 2002, you said. that's four years and less, so i still have a question: is there a subscription database that has my Globe stories going back even further? Ten years would be fabulous. thanks, joan
